Stewardship
At ZCO we use Holistic Management and appropriate animal care practices to improve ecosystem health while recycling nutrients back to the soil.
We graze our dairy goats throughout the farm and the surrounding hillsides to reduce wildfire fuel while improving the soil's health. We do this by rotating the goats daily to new grazeable areas and never leaving them too long in any one spot. This form of livestock grazing and management increases soil health, improves photosynthesis of plants, recycles nutrients back to the soil, and fertilizes the land. We also give our goats any weeds we pull or branches we prune from the land.
Our geese keep our Avocado/Coffee orchard weeded and turn the weeds into fertilizer for the trees.
Our chickens turn our wasted vegetables/fruits that come off the land into nutritious eggs. They are kept in a deep litter system that allows us to capture and compost all their manure in place, so it can then be put back out into the fruit orchards.
